What to Expect During a Postpartum Lactation Session
Breastfeeding is a learning process for both mom and baby. It may take more than one feeding session or lactation counseling session to establish a successful breastfeeding routine. Patience and practice are key, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Intake Forms
Your lactation counseling session will begin by completing the new client intake forms. These intake forms include but are not limited to, consent to treat, liability and financial agreement.
Mother and Infant History
Your lactation counselor will review both your and your baby’s health history. This includes medical history, prenatal care, labor and delivery, and any postnatal concerns. Understanding your baby's birth experience and any early feeding practices will help tailor the session to your needs.
Mother's Breast Exam
Your lactation counselor will exam your breast for any nipple pain or trauma. The exam is gentle and focuses on ensuring your comfort while assessing the health of your breasts and nipples.
Observation of Infant Oral Anatomy
Your lactation counselor will observe your baby's oral anatomy to check for any anatomical issues that could affect feeding, such as tongue tie or lip tie. This evaluation is crucial in understanding how effectively your baby can latch and transfer milk. If a abnormality is suspected, a follow up with your pediatrician will be recommend for a diagnosis.
Pre-Feed Weight
Before the feeding session, your baby’s weight will be measured. This pre-feed weight helps us establish a baseline for evaluating milk transfer and your baby's feeding efficiency.
Feeding Assessment at the Breast
During the feeding session, we will assess your baby's latch and overall feeding technique. We will observe how well your baby is attaching to the breast and whether they are transferring milk effectively. If needed, we will offer guidance and adjustments to improve the latch.
Post-Feed Weight
After the feeding, your baby’s weight will be measured again to determine how much milk they have consumed. This post-feed weight helps us assess milk transfer and ensure your baby is getting an adequate amount of nourishment.
